WORLD 100-metre record-holder, Asafa Powell, and World champion Tyson Gay could meet in a 100m race in July in a Pre-Olympics appetiser, according to MVP Track Club president Bruce James.
Powell's agent, Paul Doyle, was yesterday quoted as saying that Powell and Gay would definitely race before the Olympic Games, which will be held in Beijing, China, from August 8-24, and that it was only a matter of where and when.
James told the Observer the club would be heading to Europe for post-Olympic trials and Pre-Olympics, which leaves the month of July the only window available.
"July is a very important month for us and we're looking for the best competition for our athletes," he said.
He said MVP was considering six track & field meetings, all in Europe, at which its athletes would compete. Those meets would be Madrid on July 5, Rome on July 7, Paris (July 18), Stockholm (July 22), London (July 25) and in Monaco on July 29.
"No one athlete will run in all those meets, but those are the meets we are looking at for the various combinations of our athletes," he said.
Gay's agent, Mark Wetmore, was also quoted as saying that talks were under way, but that nothing was finalised.
"If Tyson Gay happens to enter a meet where Asafa Powell is entered then I think that would be an excellent opportunity for the track & field world to see a fantastic pre-Olympic race," James stated.
The last time Gay and Powell met was in the 100m final at last year's IAAF World Championships in Osaka where Gay won gold in 9.85 seconds and Powell bronze in (9.96). Bahamas' Derrick Atkins finished second in (9.91).
Twenty-five-year-old Powell, who clocked 10.04 seconds for victory in the 100m at a meeting in Melbourne, Australia, on February 21.
Gay is reportedly likely to compete in the 200 metres at the Jamaica International Invitational Meet on May 3, but a member of the meet's Organising Committee told the Observer 'no comment' on whether the American would compete or not until the meet had been launched.
Gay competed in the 200m at last year's Jamaica International clocking 19.97 seconds for victory and finished second the previous year in 20.12 seconds.
Both Powell and Gay have indicated they will run at the Mount San Antonio College Relays in California and the Penn Relays in Philadelphia in April.
